Reading to your child creates a special bond between parent, or other important person in their life, that fosters future enjoyment of reading. Most importantly you can demonstrate proper pronunciation and show them new words as you read. Children may not always enjoy what they read once they attend school, but will know they can read for pleasure at other times.
