According to Dictionary.com, “adverbs typically express some relation of place, time, manner, attendant circumstance, degree, cause, inference, result, condition, exception, concession, purpose, or means.” To state it more simply an adverb modifies a verb and usually ends in ly. Think of an adverb as an adjective and verb joined together.
The following are examples:
The boy ran quickly.
Joe spoke softly.
Buses often stop abruptly.
